The first experience of enlightenment occurred at sunrise after morning meditation on top of a hilltop ashram in my birth land of Trinidad in the West Indies.
It occurred in an instant, as if the whole world before my eyes transformed into one being of love. All, including this body, merged into an awareness of complete oneness. Oneness with the trees, the clouds, birds, flies, trash, dust, grass and the sea in the distance, which was miles away, but felt as if it was meeting me in all closeness as my very own breath.
Watching this complete aliveness, the inquiry began, the question of questions: who am I and what is all this? How can we be the same? Me and the trash, the bugs that cannot speak, the clothes line and garbage bin, the dust, rocks, grass and the flowers.
But we were equal. This is all I kept saying for days and months since then.
Even years later, I would still question as my mind could never fully accept, yet could never fully deny, after that day.
Thus it began, what some ten years later I would come to understand is The Self.
